Practical ‘pataphysics: Amsterdam’s Anarchist Island Builders

‘Pataphysics is the science of imaginary solutions to particularized, often symbolic, problems.
 It has never been widely practiced, but in Amsterdam, beginning in 1972, two men employed pataphysical principles to explore the allowable limits of life on the canals.

In a lecture at the Kimberley Public Library on the 19 th of March 2014 at 7 pm, Jordan Zinovich will show photographs and film clips illustrating his research into their work and the effects it had.

This presentation should prove to be good for anyone wanting to expand their beyond the box thinking. Free!

Membership Drive Open HOuse

Having seen some of the items the Friends provided for the Kimberley Public Library, (see page 'Accomplishments') you are probably wondering how you can be part of this dynamic group of volunteers.

It's easy- and worth it! Drop in to the Open House at the Bookstore in Marysville Tuesday March 18 or Wednesday March 19 from 1-3 for the special membership drive.

Kimberley Reads & Talks # 2

Kimberley Reads & Talks #2 is happening at 7 pm on Wednesday March 12 at the Friends Bookstore in Marysville. Join us to discuss the theme of INNOCENCE, in the context of a book of your choice, fiction or non-fiction. The diversity of books choices as well as the many connotations of the word ensure a lively conversation around the coffee pot and snack table.

Innocence

The choice of INNOCENCE as the theme of the next Kimberley reads & Talks .
Just what is innocence? Is it the opposite of GUILT? Is it lack of life experience? Is it naivete? All of these? Or something else entirely? Uncorrupted? Pure?

Think of the many diffrent contexts where we use this word - from 'the innocence of a child', 'one is innocent until proven guilty' , 'innocence defiled', 'innocent bystander', to 'she gazed with innocent eyes...'

In view of all these possibilities, choice of books on this theme can take us in many directions, and lead to an interesting discussion.

Kimberley reads & Talks 'Trust & Betrayal"

Kimberley Reads & Talks #1

The Friends Used Book Sore in Marysville was the perfect setting for Kimberley Reads & Talks #1.

Participants enjoyed wide ranging discussion on the theme ‘Trust and Betrayal’ Each reader introduced his choice of book somehow related to the theme, resulting in stimulating insightful discussion. Books included Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad; Caprice, by George Bowering, Watership Down by Richard Adams, a short story called Come Back My Love by Maurice Walsh in 44 Irish Short Stories, and The House of Niccola Series by Dorothy Dunnett. The books were totally different in setting-from Interior British Columbia, to 14^th century Britain. The heros were extremely different too, including a medieval merchant banker, tormented seafarer, vengeance-seeking woman, rabbits, and a romantic Irish dreamer. The pleasure each reader showed in his choice made it a ‘must read’ for the others.

The next theme is Innocence, which offers readers a broad scope in choice of book. We are looking forward to Wednesday March 12 for a good discussion of this topic and the books somehow involving Innocence.
